Question 81

HardOriginal question

If x=cos⁡tx = \cos t and y=sin⁡ty = \sin t, what is d2ydx2\frac{d^2y}{dx^2}?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. dydx=cos⁡t−sin⁡t=−cot⁡t\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{\cos t}{-\sin t} = -\cot t.

  2. ddt(−cot⁡t)=cosec⁡2t\frac{d}{dt}(-\cot t) = \operatorname{cosec}^2 t, and dividing by dxdt=−sin⁡t\frac{dx}{dt} = -\sin t gives d2ydx2=−cosec⁡3t\frac{d^2y}{dx^2} = -\operatorname{cosec}^3 t.

Worth noting

cosec⁡2t\operatorname{cosec}^2 t is the derivative with respect to tt, not yet divided by dxdt\frac{dx}{dt}.
