Question 54

MediumOriginal question

A curve is given by x=log⁡tx = \log t, y=t2y = t^{2}. What is its slope dydx\frac{dy}{dx} at t=1t = 1?

Options for question 54

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. dxdt=1t\frac{dx}{dt} = \frac{1}{t} and dydt=2t\frac{dy}{dt} = 2 t.

  2. dydx=dy/dtdx/dt=2t2\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{dy/dt}{dx/dt} = 2 t^{2}.

  3. At t=1t = 1 the slope is 22.

Worth noting

Dividing the other way round gives dxdy\frac{dx}{dy}.
