Question 75

MediumOriginal question

If y=2xy = 2^{x}, what is d2ydx2\frac{d^2y}{dx^2}?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. dydx=2xlog⁡2\frac{dy}{dx} = 2^{x}\log 2, and log⁡2\log 2 is a constant.

  2. d2ydx2=log⁡2⋅2xlog⁡2=2x(log⁡2)2\frac{d^2y}{dx^2} = \log 2 \cdot 2^{x}\log 2 = 2^{x}(\log 2)^{2}.

Worth noting

2xlog⁡22^{x}\log 2 is the first derivative; differentiating again brings out another log⁡2\log 2.
