Question 96

HardOriginal question

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. dydx=y+ex(−Asin⁡x+Bcos⁡x)\frac{dy}{dx} = y + e^{x}(-A\sin x + B\cos x), so ex(−Asin⁡x+Bcos⁡x)=dydx−ye^{x}(-A\sin x + B\cos x) = \frac{dy}{dx} - y.

  2. Differentiating again: d2ydx2=dydx+(dydx−y)−y\frac{d^2y}{dx^2} = \frac{dy}{dx} + \left(\frac{dy}{dx} - y\right) - y, that is d2ydx2−2dydx+2y=0\frac{d^2y}{dx^2} - 2\frac{dy}{dx} + 2y = 0.

Worth noting

d2ydx2+y=0\frac{d^2y}{dx^2} + y = 0 is the relation for Acos⁡x+Bsin⁡xA\cos x + B\sin x alone; the factor exe^{x} adds the middle term.
