Derivatives & Second-Order Derivatives · Question 52 of 96

Question 52

MediumOriginal question

A curve is given by x=3cos⁡tx = 3 \cos t, y=2sin⁡ty = 2 \sin t. What is its slope dydx\frac{dy}{dx} at t=π3t = \frac{\pi}{3}?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. dxdt=−3sin⁡t\frac{dx}{dt} = - 3 \sin t and dydt=2cos⁡t\frac{dy}{dt} = 2 \cos t.

  2. dydx=dy/dtdx/dt=−23tan⁡t\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{dy/dt}{dx/dt} = - \frac{2}{3 \tan t}.

  3. At t=π3t = \frac{\pi}{3} the slope is −239- \frac{2 \sqrt{3}}{9}.

Worth noting

Dividing the other way round gives dxdy\frac{dx}{dy}.
