Question 59

HardOriginal question

If x=2(t−sin⁡t)x = 2(t - \sin t) and y=2(1−cos⁡t)y = 2(1 - \cos t), what is dydx\frac{dy}{dx}?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. dxdt=2(1−cos⁡t)\frac{dx}{dt} = 2(1 - \cos t) and dydt=2sin⁡t\frac{dy}{dt} = 2\sin t, so dydx=sin⁡t1−cos⁡t\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{\sin t}{1 - \cos t}.

  2. With sin⁡t=2sin⁡t2cos⁡t2\sin t = 2\sin\frac{t}{2}\cos\frac{t}{2} and 1−cos⁡t=2sin⁡2t21 - \cos t = 2\sin^2\frac{t}{2}, this is cot⁡t2\cot\frac{t}{2}.

Worth noting

tan⁡t2\tan\frac{t}{2} is dxdy\frac{dx}{dy}, the division the other way round.
