Question 50

MediumOriginal question

What is adj⁡A\operatorname{adj} A for A=[200030004]A = \begin{bmatrix}2 & 0 & 0 \\ 0 & 3 & 0 \\ 0 & 0 & 4\end{bmatrix}?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. For a diagonal matrix the off-diagonal cofactors are all 0, and the cofactor of each diagonal element is the product of the other two.

  2. So the diagonal of adj⁡A\operatorname{adj} A is 3×4=123 \times 4 = 12, 2×4=82 \times 4 = 8 and 2×3=62 \times 3 = 6.

Worth noting

The matrix with 12\frac{1}{2}, 13\frac{1}{3}, 14\frac{1}{4} is A−1A^{-1}, which is adj⁡A\operatorname{adj} A divided by ∣A∣=24|A| = 24.
