Determinants, Adjoint & Inverse · Question 60 of 87

Question 60

MediumOriginal question

AA is an invertible matrix with ∣A∣=−4|A| = -4. What is ∣A−1∣|A^{-1}|?

Options for question 60

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. AA−1=IAA^{-1} = I, so ∣A∣∣A−1∣=∣I∣=1|A||A^{-1}| = |I| = 1.

  2. ∣A−1∣=1∣A∣=−14|A^{-1}| = \frac{1}{|A|} = -\frac{1}{4}.

Worth noting

14\frac{1}{4} drops the sign: the reciprocal of a negative number is negative.
