Question 67

HardOriginal question

For A=[235−2]A = \begin{bmatrix}2 & 3 \\ 5 & -2\end{bmatrix}, A−1=kAA^{-1} = kA. What is kk?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. ∣A∣=−4−15=−19|A| = -4 - 15 = -19 and adj⁡A=[−2−3−52]=−A\operatorname{adj} A = \begin{bmatrix} -2 & -3 \\ -5 & 2 \end{bmatrix} = -A.

  2. A−1=1−19(−A)=119AA^{-1} = \frac{1}{-19}(-A) = \frac{1}{19}A, so k=119k = \frac{1}{19}. (Indeed A2=19IA^2 = 19I.)

Worth noting

−119-\frac{1}{19} divides by ∣A∣|A| but forgets that the adjoint is −A-A, not AA.
