Question 28

MediumOriginal question

d2ydx2=6x\frac{d^2y}{dx^2} = 6x, with y=1y = 1 and dydx=2\frac{dy}{dx} = 2 when x=0x = 0. What is yy?

Options for question 28

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. Integrate once: dydx=3x2+A\frac{dy}{dx} = 3x^2 + A; dydx=2\frac{dy}{dx} = 2 at x=0x = 0 gives A=2A = 2.

  2. Integrate again: y=x3+2x+By = x^3 + 2x + B; y=1y = 1 at x=0x = 0 gives B=1B = 1.

Worth noting

y=x3+1y = x^3 + 1 uses only the condition on yy; an order-2 equation needs both constants fixed.
