Question 41

MediumOriginal question

Which differential equation does the family y=Ax+By = \frac{A}{x} + B satisfy, A,BA, B being arbitrary constants?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. dydx=−Ax2\frac{dy}{dx} = -\frac{A}{x^2}, so x2dydx=−Ax^2\frac{dy}{dx} = -A.

  2. Differentiate again: 2xdydx+x2d2ydx2=02x\frac{dy}{dx} + x^2\frac{d^2y}{dx^2} = 0, that is xd2ydx2+2dydx=0x\frac{d^2y}{dx^2} + 2\frac{dy}{dx} = 0.

Worth noting

xdydx+y=0x\frac{dy}{dx} + y = 0 is the equation of y=Axy = \frac{A}{x} alone; the +B+B needs a second derivative to remove.
