Question 63

MediumOriginal question

If dydx=e−y\frac{dy}{dx} = e^{-y} and y=0y = 0 when x=0x = 0, what is yy when x=e−1x = e - 1?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Separate: ey dy=dxe^{y}\,dy = dx, so ey=x+Ce^{y} = x + C; y(0)=0y(0) = 0 gives C=1C = 1.

  2. y=log⁡(x+1)y = \log(x + 1), and at x=e−1x = e - 1, y=log⁡e=1y = \log e = 1.

Worth noting

e−1e - 1 copies the value of xx; yy grows like a logarithm, much more slowly.
