HardOriginal question

At which x>0x > 0 is the derivative of y=x1/xy = x^{1/x} zero?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. log⁡y=log⁡xx\log y = \frac{\log x}{x}, so y′y=1−log⁡xx2\frac{y'}{y} = \frac{1 - \log x}{x^{2}}.

  2. y>0y > 0, so y′=0y' = 0 exactly when log⁡x=1\log x = 1: x=ex = e.

Worth noting

1 makes log⁡x=0\log x = 0, but it is 1−log⁡x1 - \log x that must vanish.
