Question 56

EasyOriginal question

What is ddx(log⁡5x)\frac{d}{dx}\left(\log 5x\right) for x>0x > 0?

Options for question 56

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. log⁡5x=log⁡5+log⁡x\log 5x = \log 5 + \log x, and log⁡5\log 5 is a constant.

  2. So the derivative is 0+1x=1x0 + \frac{1}{x} = \frac{1}{x}; the chain rule agrees: 55x=1x\frac{5}{5x} = \frac{1}{x}.

Worth noting

15x\frac{1}{5x} stops before multiplying by the inner derivative 5, which cancels the 5 below.
