Question 78

HardOriginal question

If f(x)=log⁡(ex+e−x)f(x) = \log(e^{x} + e^{-x}), what is f′(log⁡2)f'\left(\log 2\right)?

Options for question 78

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. f′(x)=ex−e−xex+e−xf'(x) = \frac{e^{x} - e^{-x}}{e^{x} + e^{-x}}.

  2. At x=log⁡2x = \log 2, ex=2e^{x} = 2 and e−x=12e^{-x} = \frac{1}{2}: 2−122+12=35\frac{2 - \frac{1}{2}}{2 + \frac{1}{2}} = \frac{3}{5}.

Worth noting

25\frac{2}{5} is 1u\frac{1}{u} alone, before multiplying by u′=ex−e−xu' = e^{x} - e^{-x}.
