Homogeneous & Linear Differential Equations · Question 112 of 120

Question 112

HardOriginal question

What is the general solution of xdydx+2y=x2x\frac{dy}{dx} + 2y = x^{2}?

Options for question 112

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Divide by xx: dydx+2xy=x\frac{dy}{dx} + \frac{2}{x}y = x, with factor x2x^{2}.

  2. x2y=∫x3 dx=x44+Cx^{2}y = \int x^{3}\,dx = \frac{x^{4}}{4} + C, so y=x24+Cx2y = \frac{x^{2}}{4} + \frac{C}{x^{2}}.

Worth noting

x44+C\frac{x^{4}}{4} + C is x2yx^{2}y; it still has to be divided by x2x^{2}.
