Homogeneous & Linear Differential Equations · Question 40 of 120

After the substitution, which separated form do you get?

Question 40

MediumOriginal question

Consider the differential equation x2dydx=x2+xy+y2x^{2}\frac{dy}{dx} = x^{2} + xy + y^{2}, and put y=vxy = vx.

After the substitution, which separated form do you get?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. v+xdvdx=1+v+v2v + x\frac{dv}{dx} = 1 + v + v^{2}, so xdvdx=1+v2x\frac{dv}{dx} = 1 + v^{2}.

  2. Separate: dv1+v2=dxx\frac{dv}{1 + v^{2}} = \frac{dx}{x}.

Worth noting

1+v+v21 + v + v^{2} in the denominator forgets to take away the vv from dydx=v+xdvdx\frac{dy}{dx} = v + x\frac{dv}{dx}.
