Question 27

HardOriginal question

The equation 3y ex/y dx+(y−3x ex/y) dy=03y\,e^{x/y}\,dx + (y - 3x\,e^{x/y})\,dy = 0 is written as dxdy=G(v)\frac{dx}{dy} = G(v), where v=xyv = \frac{x}{y}. What is G(v)G(v)?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Move the dydy term across, changing its sign: dxdy=3x ex/y−y3y ex/y\frac{dx}{dy} = \frac{3x\,e^{x/y} - y}{3y\,e^{x/y}}.

  2. Divide top and bottom by y ex/yy\,e^{x/y}: 3v−e−v3=v−13e−v\frac{3v - e^{-v}}{3} = v - \frac{1}{3}e^{-v}.

Worth noting

13e−v−v\frac{1}{3}e^{-v} - v keeps the sign of the dydy term; moving it across the equals sign flips it.
