Homogeneous & Linear Differential Equations · Question 35 of 120

Question 35

EasyOriginal question

Solving a homogeneous equation with y=vxy = vx, for x>0x > 0, gives 1+v2=Cx\sqrt{1 + v^{2}} = Cx. What is the solution in terms of xx and yy?

Options for question 35

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. 1+y2x2=x2+y2x\sqrt{1 + \frac{y^{2}}{x^{2}}} = \frac{\sqrt{x^{2} + y^{2}}}{x} for x>0x > 0.

  2. So x2+y2x=Cx\frac{\sqrt{x^{2} + y^{2}}}{x} = Cx, that is x2+y2=Cx2\sqrt{x^{2} + y^{2}} = Cx^{2}.

Worth noting

x2+y2=Cx\sqrt{x^{2} + y^{2}} = Cx forgets the xx in the denominator of x2+y2x\frac{\sqrt{x^{2} + y^{2}}}{x}.
