Homogeneous & Linear Differential Equations · Question 43 of 120

Question 43

MediumOriginal question

For x2dydx=y2+2xyx^{2}\frac{dy}{dx} = y^{2} + 2xy, which of the following statements are true?

I. y=vxy = vx gives xdvdx=v2+vx\frac{dv}{dx} = v^{2} + v.

II. The variables separate as dvv2+2v=dxx\frac{dv}{v^{2} + 2v} = \frac{dx}{x}.

III. The general solution is y=Cx(x+y)y = Cx(x + y).

IV. The line y=xy = x is a solution.

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. I: v+xdvdx=v2+2vv + x\frac{dv}{dx} = v^{2} + 2v, so xdvdx=v2+vx\frac{dv}{dx} = v^{2} + v; II forgets to take away vv.

  2. III: dvv(v+1)=dxx\frac{dv}{v(v + 1)} = \frac{dx}{x} gives vv+1=Cx\frac{v}{v + 1} = Cx, that is yx+y=Cx\frac{y}{x + y} = Cx. IV: on y=xy = x the left side is x2x^{2} and the right side 3x23x^{2}, so it fails.

Worth noting

II divides by F(v)=v2+2vF(v) = v^{2} + 2v instead of by F(v)−vF(v) - v.
