Question 59

HardOriginal question

For x>0x > 0, what is the general solution of xdydx−y=2x2+y2x\frac{dy}{dx} - y = 2\sqrt{x^{2} + y^{2}}?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. y=vxy = vx: xdvdx=21+v2x\frac{dv}{dx} = 2\sqrt{1 + v^{2}}, so dv1+v2=2 dxx\frac{dv}{\sqrt{1 + v^{2}}} = \frac{2\,dx}{x}.

  2. log⁡∣v+1+v2∣=2log⁡x+c\log\left\lvert v + \sqrt{1 + v^{2}} \right\rvert = 2\log x + c, so v+1+v2=Cx2v + \sqrt{1 + v^{2}} = Cx^{2}.

  3. Multiply by xx: y+x2+y2=Cx3y + \sqrt{x^{2} + y^{2}} = Cx^{3}.

Worth noting

Cx2Cx^{2} stops at v+1+v2=Cx2v + \sqrt{1 + v^{2}} = Cx^{2}; the left side is still divided by xx.
