Question 109

MediumOriginal question

For x>0x > 0, what is the general solution of xdydx−y=x2exx\frac{dy}{dx} - y = x^{2}e^{x}?

Options for question 109

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Divide by xx: dydx−1xy=xex\frac{dy}{dx} - \frac{1}{x}y = xe^{x}, with factor 1x\frac{1}{x}.

  2. yx=∫ex dx=ex+C\frac{y}{x} = \int e^{x}\,dx = e^{x} + C, so y=xex+Cxy = xe^{x} + Cx.

Worth noting

ex+Cxe^{x} + Cx multiplies only the constant by xx at the end; exe^{x} must be multiplied too.
