Homogeneous & Linear Differential Equations · Question 10 of 120

Question 10

MediumOriginal question

Which of these functions is homogeneous of degree 0?

Options for question 10

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. FF is homogeneous of degree nn when F(λx,λy)=λnF(x,y)F(\lambda x, \lambda y) = \lambda^{n} F(x, y).

  2. sin⁡(yx)\sin{\left(\frac{y}{x} \right)} passes, with degree 0; each of the others fails.

Worth noting

sin⁡yx\frac{\sin y}{x} is not homogeneous: sin⁡(λy)\sin(\lambda y) is not a power of λ\lambda times sin⁡y\sin y.
