Homogeneous & Linear Differential Equations · Question 9 of 120

Question 9

MediumOriginal question

Which of these differential equations is homogeneous?

Options for question 9

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Written as dydx=F(x,y)\frac{dy}{dx} = F(x, y), the equation is homogeneous when FF is homogeneous of degree 0.

  2. F=x2+y2x2+xyF = \frac{x^{2} + y^{2}}{x^{2} + xy} is a ratio of two degree-2 expressions, so degree 0. The +1+1, x2+yx^{2} + y and y2y^{2} spoil the others.

Worth noting

The +1+1 in x+y+1x−y\frac{x + y + 1}{x - y} has degree 0 while x+yx + y has degree 1.
