Question 8

EasyOriginal question

For F(x,y)=4x2−5xyF(x, y) = 4x^{2} - 5xy, what is F(λx,λy)F(\lambda x, \lambda y)?

Options for question 8

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Replace xx by λx\lambda x and yy by λy\lambda y: 4λ2x2−5(λx)(λy)4\lambda^{2}x^{2} - 5(\lambda x)(\lambda y).

  2. Both terms carry λ2\lambda^{2}, so F(λx,λy)=λ2(4x2−5xy)F(\lambda x, \lambda y) = \lambda^{2}(4x^{2} - 5xy): degree 2.

Worth noting

λ(4x2−5xy)\lambda(4x^{2} - 5xy) brings in one λ\lambda; each of the two letters in x2x^{2} and in xyxy brings its own.
