Homogeneous & Linear Differential Equations · Question 15 of 120

Question 15

MediumOriginal question

Which of these differential equations is not homogeneous?

Options for question 15

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Each equation is homogeneous when its dydx=F(x,y)\frac{dy}{dx} = F(x, y) has FF of degree 0.

  2. x+yx2\frac{x + y}{x^{2}} has degree 1−2=−11 - 2 = -1; the other three right sides have degree 0.

Worth noting

x dy−y dx=x2+y2 dxx\,dy - y\,dx = \sqrt{x^{2} + y^{2}}\,dx is homogeneous: dydx=y+x2+y2x\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{y + \sqrt{x^{2} + y^{2}}}{x} has degree 0.
