Homogeneous & Linear Differential Equations · Question 22 of 120

Question 22

MediumOriginal question

For which value of nn is (xny+y4) dx=x2y2 dy(x^{n}y + y^{4})\,dx = x^{2}y^{2}\,dy a homogeneous differential equation?

Options for question 22

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. dydx=xny+y4x2y2\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{x^{n}y + y^{4}}{x^{2}y^{2}}; both x2y2x^{2}y^{2} and y4y^{4} have degree 4.

  2. So xnyx^{n}y needs degree 4 as well: n+1=4n + 1 = 4, n=3n = 3.

Worth noting

4 gives xnx^{n} alone degree 4 and forgets the factor yy in xnyx^{n}y.
