Homogeneous & Linear Differential Equations · Question 24 of 120

Question 24

MediumOriginal question

The equation (x2−2y2) dx+xy dy=0(x^{2} - 2y^{2})\,dx + xy\,dy = 0 is written as dydx=F(v)\frac{dy}{dx} = F(v), where v=yxv = \frac{y}{x}. What is F(v)F(v)?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. xy dy=−(x2−2y2) dxxy\,dy = -(x^{2} - 2y^{2})\,dx, so dydx=2y2−x2xy\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{2y^{2} - x^{2}}{xy}.

  2. Divide top and bottom by x2x^{2}: 2v2−1v=2v−1v\frac{2v^{2} - 1}{v} = 2v - \frac{1}{v}.

Worth noting

1v−2v\frac{1}{v} - 2v forgets the minus sign that comes from moving the dxdx term across.
