Homogeneous & Linear Differential Equations · Question 45 of 120

Which separated form does x = vy give?

Question 45

MediumOriginal question

Consider the differential equation y ex/y dx=(x ex/y+y) dyy\,e^{x/y}\,dx = (x\,e^{x/y} + y)\,dy, and put x=vyx = vy.

Which separated form does x=vyx = vy give?

Options for question 45

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. dxdy=v+ydvdy=v+e−v\frac{dx}{dy} = v + y\frac{dv}{dy} = v + e^{-v}, so ydvdy=e−vy\frac{dv}{dy} = e^{-v}.

  2. Separate: dve−v=ev dv=dyy\frac{dv}{e^{-v}} = e^{v}\,dv = \frac{dy}{y}.

Worth noting

e−v dve^{-v}\,dv multiplies by e−ve^{-v} where the step divides by it.
