Question 52

HardOriginal question

What is the general solution of 2xydydx=x2+y22xy\frac{dy}{dx} = x^{2} + y^{2}?

Options for question 52

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. y=vxy = vx: v+xdvdx=1+v22vv + x\frac{dv}{dx} = \frac{1 + v^{2}}{2v}, so 2v dv1−v2=dxx\frac{2v\,dv}{1 - v^{2}} = \frac{dx}{x}.

  2. −log⁡∣1−v2∣=log⁡∣x∣+c-\log\lvert 1 - v^{2} \rvert = \log\lvert x \rvert + c, so x(1−v2)=Cx(1 - v^{2}) = C: x2−y2=Cxx^{2} - y^{2} = Cx.

Worth noting

x2−y2=Cx^{2} - y^{2} = C loses the factor xx when 1−v21 - v^{2} is multiplied out.
