Increasing & Decreasing Functions · Question 67 of 74

Question 67

MediumOriginal question

For what values of kk is f(x)=x2−kx+4f(x) = x^2 - kx + 4 strictly increasing on (3,∞)(3, \infty)?

Options for question 67

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. f′(x)=2x−kf'(x) = 2x - k, which is positive for x>k2x > \frac{k}{2}.

  2. The whole interval (3,∞)(3, \infty) must lie in x>k2x > \frac{k}{2}, so k2≤3\frac{k}{2} \le 3, that is k≤6k \le 6.

Worth noting

k≤3k \le 3 forgets that the turning point is at k2\frac{k}{2}, not at kk.
