CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Take u=tan⁡−1xu = \tan^{-1} x and dv=dxdv = dx, the hidden factor 1: then v=xv = x.

  2. xtan⁡−1x−∫x1+x2 dx=xtan⁡−1x−12log⁡(1+x2)+Cx\tan^{-1} x - \int \frac{x}{1 + x^2}\,dx = x\tan^{-1} x - \frac{1}{2}\log(1 + x^2) + C.

Worth noting

∫x1+x2 dx\int \frac{x}{1 + x^2}\,dx is 12log⁡(1+x2)\frac{1}{2}\log(1 + x^2); dropping the 12\frac{1}{2} gives xtan⁡−1x−log⁡(1+x2)x\tan^{-1} x - \log(1 + x^2).
