Question 86

HardOriginal question

Evaluate ∫x2ex dx\int x^{2} e^{x}\,dx.

Options for question 86

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. By parts, ∫u dv=uv−∫v du\int u\,dv = uv - \int v\,du, with u=x2u = x^{2} and dv=ex dxdv = e^{x}\,dx, so v=exv = e^{x}.

  2. x2ex−∫2xex dx=(x2−2x+2)ex+Cx^{2} e^{x} - \int 2 x e^{x}\,dx = \left(x^{2} - 2 x + 2\right) e^{x} + C.

Worth noting

Adding the second integral instead of subtracting it is the slip one of the options is built on.
