Question 52

MediumOriginal question

Evaluate ∫1x2−16 dx\int \frac{1}{\sqrt{x^{2} - 16}}\,dx.

Options for question 52

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer B

Correct answer: B

Explanation

  1. ∫dxx2−a2=log⁡∣x+x2−a2∣+C\int \frac{dx}{\sqrt{x^{2} - a^{2}}} = \log\left|x + \sqrt{x^{2} - a^{2}}\right| + C.

  2. With a=4a = 4: log⁡∣x+x2−16∣+C\log\left|x + \sqrt{x^{2} - 16}\right| + C.

Worth noting

This formula has no 1a\frac{1}{a} in front, unlike ∫dxx2+a2\int \frac{dx}{x^{2} + a^{2}}.
