Question 71

HardOriginal question

Evaluate ∫x2x2−4 dx\int \frac{x^{2}}{x^{2} - 4}\,dx.

Options for question 71

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. The fraction is improper: x2x2−4=1+4x2−4\frac{x^{2}}{x^{2} - 4} = 1 + \frac{4}{x^{2} - 4}.

  2. ∫4 dxx2−4=4⋅14log⁡∣x−2x+2∣\int \frac{4\,dx}{x^{2} - 4} = 4 \cdot \frac{1}{4}\log\left|\frac{x - 2}{x + 2}\right|, so the integral is x+log⁡∣x−2x+2∣+Cx + \log\left|\frac{x - 2}{x + 2}\right| + C.

Worth noting

Leaving out xx forgets the 1 that the division gives first.
