Inverse Trigonometric Functions · Question 55 of 120

Question 55

MediumOriginal question

Which of these has the greatest principal value?

Options for question 55

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. cot⁡−1(−3)=5π6\cot^{-1}\left(-\sqrt{3}\right) = \frac{5\pi}{6}, cos⁡−1(−12)=2π3\cos^{-1}\left(-\frac{1}{2}\right) = \frac{2\pi}{3} and sin⁡−1(1)=π2\sin^{-1}(1) = \frac{\pi}{2}.

  2. tan⁡−1(1000)\tan^{-1}(1000) stays below π2\frac{\pi}{2}, however large the input; so 5π6\frac{5\pi}{6} is the greatest.

Worth noting

A huge input does not give a huge angle: every value of tan⁡−1\tan^{-1} is below π2\frac{\pi}{2}.
