Inverse Trigonometric Functions · Question 58 of 120

Question 58

MediumOriginal question

Assertion (A): cot⁡−1(−1)=3π4\cot^{-1}(-1) = \frac{3\pi}{4}.

Reason (R): cot⁡−1x=tan⁡−11x\cot^{-1} x = \tan^{-1} \frac{1}{x} for every x≠0x \ne 0.

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. A is true: cot⁡3π4=−1\cot \frac{3\pi}{4} = -1, and 3π4\frac{3\pi}{4} is in (0,π)(0, \pi).

  2. R is false: at x=−1x = -1 it gives tan⁡−1(−1)=−π4\tan^{-1}(-1) = -\frac{\pi}{4}, outside (0,π)(0, \pi); the rule holds only for x>0x > 0.

Worth noting

R swaps cot⁡−1\cot^{-1} for tan⁡−1\tan^{-1} of the reciprocal, which drops a negative input onto the wrong branch.
