Question 58

HardOriginal question

What is the minimum value of Z=5x+4yZ = 5x + 4y subject to x+2y≥10,3x+y≥15,x≥0,y≥0x + 2y \ge 10, 3x + y \ge 15, x \ge 0, y \ge 0?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Corners: (0,15)(0, 15), (4,3)(4, 3), (10,0)(10, 0); ZZ there is 6060, 3232, 5050.

  2. The region is unbounded, so check that 5x+4y<325x + 4y < 32 has no point in common with it: the line 5x+4y=325x + 4y = 32 touches the region only at (4,3)(4, 3).

  3. So the minimum is 3232.

Worth noting

On an unbounded region the largest corner value is not a maximum: ZZ can grow without limit.
