Question 45

EasyOriginal question

If A=[1234]A = \begin{bmatrix}1 & 2 \\ 3 & 4\end{bmatrix} and B=[2013]B = \begin{bmatrix}2 & 0 \\ 1 & 3\end{bmatrix}, what is ABAB?

Options for question 45

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Each element of ABAB is a row of AA times a column of BB, entry by entry, added up.

  2. For example, row 1 times column 1: (1)(2)+(2)(1)=4(1)(2) + (2)(1) = 4.

  3. So AB=[461012]AB = \begin{bmatrix}4 & 6 \\ 10 & 12\end{bmatrix}.

Worth noting

Multiplying the corresponding entries is not matrix multiplication, and BABA is usually a different matrix.
