Question 73

HardOriginal question

If A=[p23−p]A = \begin{bmatrix}p & 2 \\ 3 & - p\end{bmatrix} and A2=15IA^2 = 15I, what are the possible values of pp?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. A2=[p2+600p2+6]A^2 = \begin{bmatrix}p^{2} + 6 & 0 \\ 0 & p^{2} + 6\end{bmatrix}, which is (p2+6)I(p^2 + 6)I.

  2. p2+6=15p^2 + 6 = 15 gives p2=9p^2 = 9, so p=3p = 3 or p=−3p = -3.

Worth noting

±15\pm\sqrt{15} sets p2=15p^2 = 15 and forgets the 66 from 2×32 \times 3.
