Question 48

MediumOriginal question

If A=[2k13]A = \begin{bmatrix}2 & k \\ 1 & 3\end{bmatrix}, B=[3−6−12]B = \begin{bmatrix}3 & -6 \\ -1 & 2\end{bmatrix} and AB=OAB = O, what is kk?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. Row 1 of AA times column 1 of BB: 2(3)+k(−1)=6−k2(3) + k(-1) = 6 - k, which must be 0.

  2. So k=6k = 6, and the other three elements, −12+2k-12 + 2k, 3−33 - 3 and −6+6-6 + 6, are 0 as well. Neither AA nor BB is OO, yet AB=OAB = O.

Worth noting

−6-6 solves 6+k=06 + k = 0, which drops the minus sign of −1-1.
