Question 50

MediumOriginal question

If A=[2−103]A = \begin{bmatrix}2 & -1 \\ 0 & 3\end{bmatrix} and B=[142−2]B = \begin{bmatrix}1 & 4 \\ 2 & -2\end{bmatrix}, what is ABAB?

Options for question 50

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Each element of ABAB is a row of AA times a column of BB, entry by entry, added up.

  2. For example, row 1 times column 1: (2)(1)+(−1)(2)=0(2)(1) + (-1)(2) = 0.

  3. So AB=[0106−6]AB = \begin{bmatrix}0 & 10 \\ 6 & -6\end{bmatrix}.

Worth noting

Multiplying the corresponding entries is not matrix multiplication, and BABA is usually a different matrix.
