Question 18

MediumOriginal question

A function has f′(x)=(x−1)(x−3)2f'(x) = (x - 1)(x - 3)^2. Where does it have local extrema?

Options for question 18

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. (x−3)2≥0(x - 3)^2 \ge 0, so the sign of f′f' is the sign of x−1x - 1: negative before 1, positive after.

  2. So x=1x = 1 is a local minimum. At x=3x = 3, f′f' is positive on both sides: no extremum there.

Worth noting

A squared factor makes f′=0f' = 0 without a change of sign, so x=3x = 3 is a critical point but not an extremum.
