HardOriginal question

What is the maximum value of f(x)=log⁡xxf(x) = \frac{\log x}{x} for x>0x > 0?

Options for question 46

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. f′(x)=1−log⁡xx2=0f'(x) = \frac{1 - \log x}{x^{2}} = 0 at log⁡x=1\log x = 1, that is x=ex = e.

  2. f′f' is positive before ee and negative after, so the maximum value is f(e)=1ef(e) = \frac{1}{e}.

Worth noting

ee is where the maximum occurs; the value is log⁡ee=1e\frac{\log e}{e} = \frac{1}{e}.
