Maxima & Minima · Question 23 of 80

Question 23

MediumOriginal question

At which point does f(x)=2x3+3x2−12x+1f(x) = 2 x^{3} + 3 x^{2} - 12 x + 1 have a local maximum?

Options for question 23

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. f′(x)=6(x−1)(x+2)f'(x) = 6 \left(x - 1\right) \left(x + 2\right).

  2. f′f' changes from positive to negative at x=−2x = -2, so ff rises then falls there: a local maximum.

Worth noting

At x=1x = 1 the sign changes the other way: that is the local minimum.
