CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. With legs aa and bb, a2+b2=100a^{2} + b^{2} = 100 and the area is 12ab=12a100−a2\frac{1}{2}ab = \frac{1}{2}a\sqrt{100 - a^{2}}.

  2. Its square, 14(100a2−a4)\frac{1}{4}(100a^{2} - a^{4}), is largest when a2=50a^{2} = 50: then b2=50b^{2} = 50 too, and the area is 12×50=25\frac{1}{2} \times 50 = 25.

Worth noting

24 is the 6-8-10 triangle; the isosceles right triangle beats it.
