Normal Distribution · Question 34 of 68

The figure shows the standard normal curve with the area from z = -1 to z = 2 shaded.

Question 34

MediumOriginal question

The figure shows the standard normal curve with the area from z=−1z = -1 to z=2z = 2 shaded. Given P(0<Z<1)=0.3413P(0 < Z < 1) = 0.3413 and P(0<Z<2)=0.4772P(0 < Z < 2) = 0.4772, what is the shaded area?

The standard normal curve with the area under it from z = −1 to z = 2 shaded.

CorrectNot quiteAnswer C

Correct answer: C

Explanation

  1. The shaded region straddles 0: by symmetry, the part from −1-1 to 0 equals the part from 0 to 1, 0.3413.

  2. Shaded area =0.3413+0.4772=0.8185= 0.3413 + 0.4772 = 0.8185.

Worth noting

0.1359 subtracts the two areas, which is right only when both z-values are on the same side of 0.
