Question 7

MediumOriginal question

x<y<0x < y < 0. Which of these is true?

Options for question 7

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Both are negative and xx is further from 0, so x2>y2x^{2} > y^{2}: for example −3<−2-3 < -2 and 9>49 > 4.

  2. Also 1−3>1−2\frac{1}{-3} > \frac{1}{-2}, and the product of two negatives is positive.

Worth noting

x2<y2x^{2} < y^{2} would be right for positive numbers; squaring two negatives reverses their order.
