Question 69

MediumOriginal question

P(A)=0.6P(A) = 0.6, P(B)=0.3P(B) = 0.3 and P(A∩B)=0.1P(A \cap B) = 0.1. What is the probability that exactly one of AA and BB happens?

Options for question 69

Show the answer and explanation
CorrectNot quiteAnswer A

Correct answer: A

Explanation

  1. Exactly one is P(A∪B)−P(A∩B)P(A \cup B) - P(A \cap B), that is P(A)+P(B)−2P(A∩B)P(A) + P(B) - 2P(A \cap B).

  2. 0.6+0.3−0.2=0.70.6 + 0.3 - 0.2 = 0.7.

Worth noting

0.8 is P(A∪B)P(A \cup B), which also counts both happening.
