Question 82

HardOriginal question

The direction cosines l,m,nl, m, n of two lines satisfy 2l+2m−3n=02l + 2m - 3n = 0 and mn+nl−3lm=0mn + nl - 3lm = 0. What is the cosine of the angle between the lines?

CorrectNot quiteAnswer D

Correct answer: D

Explanation

  1. From the first, n=2(l+m)3n = \frac{2(l + m)}{3}; then mn+nl=n(l+m)=3lmmn + nl = n(l + m) = 3lm gives 2(l+m)2=9lm2(l + m)^{2} = 9lm, that is (2l−m)(l−2m)=0(2l - m)(l - 2m) = 0.

  2. m=2lm = 2l gives direction ratios 1,2,21, 2, 2; l=2ml = 2m gives 2,1,22, 1, 2.

  3. cos⁡θ=2+2+43×3=89\cos \theta = \frac{2 + 2 + 4}{3 \times 3} = \frac{8}{9}.

Worth noting

49\frac{4}{9} leaves out the product of the zz-ratios, 2×22 \times 2.
